“Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel.” – 1 Samuel 15:17 NIV
As a Christian, you encountered GOD when you were at your lowest and you felt worthless, you could not understand why GOD wanted a relationship with you. Why would the creator want fellowship with a measly sinner like yourself? Every time you read the Word you became so convicted to almost the point of condemnation. The Word pierced your heart and separated your bone from the marrow. Being in His presence was so overwhelming and you couldn’t get enough of it. You couldn’t wait to be among the saints and you probably used to come to church very early. You were so obsessed with the Word that every free moment was spent reading, studying, and meditating on the Word. This is the time when you frequently saw and personally experienced the flow of GOD. These were the times when you truly felt unworthy to be a vessel used by GOD (not the false humility that is church these days).
“But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first!” (Revelation 2:4 NLT). Then familiarity crept in and your “knowledge” of scripture and praises from your brethren massaged your ego. You now consider yourself a “mature” Christian who now has a “deeper” revelation of the Word. No one can correct or rebuke you, the people you once looked up to are now your peers. No one has the right to correct you because only the Holy Spirit can correct you, and since He hasn’t said anything to you directly, everyone else does not have your kind of anointing and revelation.
Saul was once small in his own eyes and he looked to GOD and Samuel for direction. He didn’t make a move without first hearing from GOD. He then became too familiar with the things of GOD and became rebellious. As Christians, we need to be careful not to become too familiar with the things of GOD. We need to always remind ourselves who we are in GOD and where we once were. We always need to return to our first love. Same way, as a married man, I still do things that won my wife over, I also need to continue fanning into flame my relationship with GOD. This will then allow the Word to do what it’s meant to do in my life (Hebrews 4:12). And when GOD uses my brethren to correct me I receive it with all humility. The key is to always remember that I’m still under discipleship and I’m still accountable to my fellow brethren.
