Discovering Your God-Given Identity

The Apostle Peter was a Jew given the Hebrew name Shimon at birth, meaning “he has heard.” We know this name in English as Simon. Simon’s brother Andrew introduced him to Yeshua.

“When Yeshua looked at him, he said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). (John 1:42)

In Aramaic (the common language of the day in Israel under the Roman Empire) kêfâ can mean a small stone or rock.  In Greek, a small rock is petros, and that transliterates into English as Peter. Peter’s new name is a lovely gift from the Yeshua to His disciple, a constant reminder of who Peter is to be aligned with and keep his eye on — the Divine and Precious Cornerstone Himself.

Lessons from Peter: Growing Into Your Calling

Peter had to grow into his calling. He was an ordinary fisherman, but after obeying Yeshua when asked to through out the nets on the other side, he realized that when you listen to Yeshua and follow His ways, you will succeed. His nets were filled to the brim with fishes. Peter knelt down before Yeshua , the rabbi. Seeing Peter’s obedience and humility, Yeshua spoke this prophetic word over him:

“Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”  (Luke 5:10)

Peter went through different stages before qualiyfying to be the small stone, the Cephas. He had to learn to overcome fear (walking on the water), he had to realize that it is false to deny Yeshua three times, when Yeshua underwent the trial. In the end, however, Peter lead the 12 apostles and he was the one the others relied on.

Biblical Stories of Name Changes

Other biblical figures also received new names by God or Yeshua.

Abram's name, which meant "exalted father", was changed to Abraham to signify God's promise to make him the "father of many nations". The change happened when God made a new covenant with Abram, and the new name, meaning "father of a multitude," represented a future reality that was a completed action in God's eyes. In addition to this, Abram's wife, Sarai, was also renamed Sarah.

Other biblical names that changed where Jacob to Israel, or Saul to Paul, and many more. Everytime God announced a change and a new seed was planted into the person. This seed had to grow and get rooted deeply into the person.

You were give a name or even two or three birth by your parents. I learned that this name was God inspired and that every name carries a certain meaning. Then one night, I was woken up by Abba Yah. He called me with a new name. I was shocked at first, but then I raelized that Abba was showing me my new personality. I looked for the meaning of that name, started to go through the Bible to learn mor about the character. Who was she? How did God see the person with the same name? Are there more people carrying the same name? I realized where the person had problems, where she had weaknesse and what strong character traits did she have. In the end I learned to accept the intended changes and also the new character traits of the new me. I also learned that this name was just for me. I shouldn't reveal it to everyone.
